What is the WELL Building Standard™?
One of the most efficient tools for measuring health and wellbeing in the workplace is the WELL Building Standard™ performance-based certification. With certification levels ranging from Bronze through to Platinum, there is emphasis on the necessary inclusion of elements such as Air, Water, Light, Sound, Materials and Biophilia within buildings of every classification.
The certification, developed by the International Well Building Institute, is utilised on a global scale and focuses on every aspect of a building from wall material through to office furniture. Its application ensures that buildings are measured, certified and monitored safely, creating an environment that promotes physical wellbeing and good mental health.
The importance of Air and Biophilia on wellbeing
According to the WELL Building Standard, workers spend approximately 90% of their time in enclosed spaces. That’s a LOT of time! All of that time spent away from the great outdoors, of which humans are naturally drawn towards, can have a deeply profound effect on both physical and mental health. The impact of indoor toxic pollutants on our health can be damaging and even lead to cancer.
It is for this very purpose that the Air and Biophilia element invites workspace designers to consider the support of environmental qualities for improved health benefits. Important factors within the Standard include the optimisation of air quality, good ventilation, air filtration and pollution management.
The inclusion of furniture choices that can be utilised both indoors and outdoors are hugely impactful for health benefits, and the addition of biophilia where possible provides a much-desired human connection with nature. Biophilia is proven to have a positive impact on cognitive function, focus and stamina and, more significantly, the emphasis on plant life has a direct impact on air quality.
Introduce Biophilia with the Osti Cloud
Frövi’s Osti Cloud is the perfect addition for a workspace that is keen to address this Biophilia element. Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, the Osti Cloud canopy offers an ideal space for lighting, plants and decoration. As a flexible furniture piece, the canopy is quick and easy to assemble for easy transportation; a wonderful outdoor attraction in the warmer months that is suitably protected from all-weathers due its UV and weather resistance properties. Additionally, for indoor use, the canopy boasts an easy-clean design - essential in the current times of extreme cleanliness and good hygiene.
Osti Cloud is available in a range of colours to support your existing workspace design, so there is no need for a complete re-haul. From Burnt Orange and Beetroot for the more daring office, to natural Mint and Camomile to complement natural designs, there is plentiful choice available.
No harmful VOCs
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are substances of both natural and artificial origins that are emitted as gases from solids or liquids.
Some VOCs are harmful to human health while some are known or suspected carcinogens, they may also have a wide range of health effects from nose, eye and throat irritation, headaches and nausea, to liver kidney and central nervous system damage.
The WELL Building Standard requires adherence to emission thresholds for materials placed inside the building envelope.
All Frövi products are tested for their VOC offset levels to reduce their impact on indoor air quality and are certified SCS Indoor Advantage Gold.
Furniture can play a large part in helping you achieve the WELL Building Standard certification. Furniture choices that promote better air quality and improve mental and physical health are a must-have for any workspace. More importantly, you too can raise your health standards by promoting a ‘Person First’ Environment.
At Frövi, we aim to design our products with the WELL Building Standard in mind. If you would like to know more about the Osti Cloud, please get in touch with one of our team.
